Vattakunnel & van Rensburg Aquatic Centre
With very little or no financial support we have managed to build facilities for our learners that compare favorably with the best you can find in other private institutions.
We are very proud of our institution; the facilities we have established over the past 27 years and the products we prepare here at Khanyisa High School. The vision for building a facility like this, an Olympic Swimming Pool, is to provide our learners with another facility to get involved in an extra-mural activity.
We have reason to celebrate our excellence in the many aspects of school life since 1994. We organized many extra-mural activity days and tournaments and involved many schools from our region to participate. We believe that physically fit learners will also harbor healthy minds.
The statistics indicate that 600 plus children and 2000 plus adults lose their lives in water every year. This sad reality led us to set out on a programme to teach all learners in Khanyisa to become competent swimmers.
Grades 8 and 9 have already been introduced to this programme. We hope to find time in the time table to accommodate grade 10 soon. We employed a professional coach and a fulltime life saver at the pool for this purpose.
This facility is available to any organization or interested group on a Rand for Rand basis to use for the coaching of an aquatic activity. We actually challenge people and organizations involved in sport to take up our offer seriously. Diving boards will also be installed in future. The immediate need is to install a solar heating system, erect a stand for spectators as well as to put a roof over the pool to allow swimming all year round. Facilities like this will uplift the standard of sport in Mthatha, the forgotten city. `
We hope that this will encourage more learners to enhance their swimming skills.
