Rugby at Khanyisa High School over the years

It is a fact that rugby players from all the cultures in the Eastern Cape Province are very passionate about rugby. There is an interest in this sport amongst young men in other provinces too, but the Eastern Cape Province is the heartland of Black Rugby in South Africa. To put it in perspective, rugby is for the boys in the Eastern Cape and very specifically, the rugby playersat Khanyisa High School, everything.

They just love being involved in this sport. They endure the pain, the long hours of training in heat and cold, the traveling to other towns and sacrifices on time, just to play again and again. I personally enjoy the respect and spirit of these guys. I respect them too for their commitment, their loyalty to the school and their team mates and the success they had this year. There are always exceptions but generally our players put Khanyisa rugby first.

Over the past few years it has become a way of living, a realisation of their dreams and a deep rooted desire to be a champion. Rugby has brought a number of young men to Khanyisa High School and the draw card was the rugby they play, the opportunities which are offered to them by the school, the spirit amongst the young men on and off the field and the friendships which are created. As an administrator you have to admire these young men and live with them through their successes and disappointments. The encouragement and unity might be misinterpreted by some, but young men need the positive encouragement and support to excel in what they want to achieve.

In 2012 the players were very few, no actual facilities and no kit. The general attitude was that rugby was a disgrace to the school and the team was run over by any other school. Things changed over the years. There were men along the road who did the school so proud. First it was one player selected to go to Craven Week and one player to go to the Academy Week, then it was 3, then 5, then 8, them 12 and this year 15 boys went to the National tournaments, representing Border Country Districts. The numbers of the boys who were interested in playing the game grew from about fifteen players in 2012 to about 80 in 2019.

Khanyisa High School has become known as the rugby school in Mthatha and we enjoy to be known for that. The unfortunate part of it is that it is difficult to find fixtures for all our teams. We still do not have sport fields, which make things worse as we have to pay huge amounts of money to hire fields in town to accommodate our events.

There is hope for the future, as we shall develop the land we have purchased for that purpose, although it will take time and lots of money to do so Khanyisa can look forward to the day it shall have stadiums where our learners can play and display their talents on the sporting fields. Sporting facilities for all codes is the big drawback for the proper development of the youth of Mthatha.

Khanyisa High School first Rugby Team during the first rugby day

Khanyisa High School hosted two rugby days in 2019 on the sport field of Umtata High School to celebrate 25 Years of Excellence. During the two rugby days, 26 rugby teams with coaches and managers were in action, 650 boys participated, nearly a hundred officials and staff members made sure that proceedings ran fluently. Sixty tries were scored and every player, manager and coach received a T-shirt provided by Khanyisa High School.

The Rugby Days could be described as very successful. Floating trophies and Man of the Match awards were made. Team photographs were handed over and in general the rugby atmosphere was conducive and something special. It was indeed a happy day as the rugby structures in Mthatha supported the event and gave it their blessing. We hope to grow this event even more in future.

Like all the previous years, rugby at Khanyisa High School got off to a very early and serious start. The expectations were high and the numbers attending the practices were very encouraging. With limited space and time to train we had to try to accommodate all those who showed up. The year 2020 was special in the sense that we were celebrating 25 years of excellence.

The kick-off to the season was also earlier than usual. We agreed to participate in the Mthatha Health Club Tournament on 16 February where we first played against Umtata High School. Khanyisa won by 44 – 0. This match was followed by a tough encounter against St John’s College. Khanyisa managed to win this encounter by 22 -12.

Our visit to Mt. Pakard on 23 February was as usual a very tough encounter. Our second team went down by 24 -7 in which even some Queens College players featured. The first team played against a Mqanduli Sharks team. We were not disgraced but lost the match by 26 -17.

Xola Ngqoshane and Simamkele Fuzile.Xola was one of our dearest rugby friends who moved on. We shall forever miss him. May his soul rest in Peace.

Our next appointment was versus Lillyfontein Private School at the Border Rugby Day at Selborne College. In very rainy conditions Khanyisa High School pulled a comfortable win of 19 – 10. After the March holidays we travelled to Maclear to participate in the Maclear High School Rugby Day. We had to play well to beat Dordrecht High School by 17 -6.

On April 13, 2019 Khanyisa High School hosted a very successful rugby day. Twelve teams were invited to participate in our Jubilee celebrations on the Rugby field.

Khanyisa played in the last match of the day but our team proved to be far too strong for Mida School from Dutywa. The opponents threw the towel in at halftime when the score was already 55 – 0. Some excellent rugby was played on the day with not less than 40 tries scored. Two hundred and seventy six players participated in the day. Each player received a T-shirt and teams were awarded for excellent play.

This logo was seen at at least 12 school all over the O.R.Tambo region for a long time/Khanyisa 25 years of excellence.

We hosted Beylets High School first and second teams from East London after our rugby day. Our second team had to play well to beat their opponents by 12 -7. The Beylets High School first team threw the towel in before halftime with the score on 27 –0 and once again our team felt hard done by the shortened match.

Beyletts High School from East London

In a midweek match Khanyisa High school managed to beat a team from Umtata International School by 21 -10. The match was played in good spirit and we are looking forward to renew our relationship with U.I.S.

Our outing to Ugie High School on May 11, 2019 was indeed a pleasant and valued fixture. Our second team once again was very lucky to pull off a 7-0 win. The first team had to work very hard to get the better of the opponents. The final score as 20-5. We enjoyed the hospitality we received and the good spirit in which the matches were played. We shall miss the healthy relationship we had with Mr. Groom, the Ugie coach. It was ahuge shock when we learnt of his passing. May his soul rest in peace.

Our second team played against the Border Country Grant Khomoteam on 19 June 2019 and gave a very good account of themselves. They lost the match 12 – 0 but the Grant Khomo team had to work very hard to contain our team.

During the June/July School Holidays 15 of our rugby players participated in the National Youth Weeks in White River, Bloemfontein and Paarl. The number of the boys who get selected every year is just getting more and more.

The First and Second teams travelled to Maclear on 27 July to play against Umthawelanga teams which were in fact combined teams of schools and players from the community. The second team stamped down their authority and won 19 -7 but the first team lost a very ill-tempered match 26 – 12.

Khanyisa High School vsUmthawelanga High School from Maclear

On August 03, 2019 our second team participated in the Mandela Youth Day tournament. They managed to beat Bhekizulu High School from Libode by 13 – 12 but got unstuck against Ngangelizwe High School first team. The score was 20 – 3 in favour of Ngangelizwe High School.

On the same day Khanyisa High School First team played against Ugie High School in a curtain raiser match for the Border Bulldogs vs the EP Elephants. Khanyisa won this scrappy match 28 – 7. Khanyisa seldom played to their full potential the whole season.

Khanyisa High School organised a second Rugby Day on Women’s Day to accommodate those schools who could not participate in the first rugby day. Fourteen teems (u/13 six teams and u/18, eight teams) participated.

Once again the day was a great success with 380 players participating. Again T-shirts were handed out to all the players and floating Trophies went to the team that scored the most tries, the team that played the best rugby, the best forward player of the day and then lastly the best backline player of the day

Khanyisa High School First Team with LwaziMdoda leading the war cry.

The Khanyisa High School First team was awarded with the trophy for the team that played the most attractive rugby although they were beaten by the Mqanduli Sharks team by 24 – 12.

During October a few of our rugby players travelled to Lusikisiki to participate in the O.R.Tambo Municipality 7’s tournament. Three of our players were selected for the O.R.Tambo Team and travelled to Port Elizabeth in November 2020 to compete against other regional municipality teams. The three players are Anathti Veyitshili, Lwazi Mdoda and Avela Ngqabeni. We wish them well and every success in this tournament.

The rugby season of 2019 was successful and most of the players had the opportunity to play the sport they love so much. It remains a huge challenge to get fields to practise or to play matches on. The delay in developing the land Khanyisa High School purchased affects the development of sport at the school negatively.

We are planning to prepare two “First” teams, two "Second" teams and two "Third" teams of equal strength for next year in an effort to get more matches for our players. We shall decide on the names for the two teams at the beginning of the year.

The expectations are that many young men will join our club and live their dreams.

Thank you

Swimming at Khanyisa High School

Swimming at Khanyisa High School had a very good start and the activity has become very popular amongst our learners, especially in the lower grades. Thank you very much to Ms. Margaret Sutherland who was coaching all the grade eight and nine learners water safety and how the swim. The number of participants steadily increased and the committed swimmers really worked and trained hard to up their skills in this sport. Most of the committed swimmers trained every day.

Excellence is achieved by hard work, perseverance and commitment. Big was the excitement when the first swimmers managed to swim 1km (20 times the 50m length) in the pool. After this achievement about every swimmer challenged the distance. The confidence of the swimmers grew and big was the excitement when we were invited to travel to East London to participate in a level 1 gala in the Joan Harrison swimming Pool.

To be on time for registration we had to depart as early as 5 o’clock in the morning and every swimmer was on time and ready for the big excitement and challenge. Everyone was a bit nervous but really enjoyed the outing. We need to thank the sponsors of the team namely Jumbo Wholesalers who sponsored the team with drinks and water, Standard Bank who sponsored the swimmers with T-shirts with their names printed on it and Pannarotti’s who provided the team with a lunch pack. The team was really spoilt by all the support and excitement from the community for being the first Khanyisa High School swimming team.

In total the team of 18 swimmers won 13 ribbons (medals) during the gala.

There are many potential as well as competitive swimmers at the school. At one stage there were as many as 78 swimmers training in the pool. We have to mention Kuhle Landule who could not swim at all, but through commitment and dedication he really showed that a disability can be overcome by a positive attitude and self-discipline. We are very proud of him and for being selected for the Khanyisa High School Swimming Team.

Liyema Luwaca was selected as the first swimming captain. Swimmers must be disciplined and train very hard and basically every day to become competitive.

Thank you to all our committed coaches for all the hours of walking up and down on the side of the Khanyisa pool. We really appreciate your dedication.

ATHLETICS REPORT

On the 30th January 2015, the school held inter-house athletics at Umtata High school grounds. This was in preparation for inter-schools Athletics Competitions (Sub Circuits), which were to be held at Jersey Farm J.S.S on 04 February 2015. For the first time in K.H.S History we had a maximum participation from our learners as 120 learners proceeded to Circuit level which was held at Springvale Grounds on 06 February 2015.

Again, our team performed very well as 47 leaners managed to proceed to District level competitions which were held at WSU (Unitra) Grounds on 13 to14 February 2015. This was the first time that K.H.S had such a big number of Athletes at District level compared to the previous years were the school fielded 2 or 3 . From the District level, 6 leaners proceeded to regional level which was also held at WSU Grounds on 20 to 21 February 2015 and of course our learners excelled as they managed to get medals as illustrated below:

No Surname Name Event Medal
1 Moloko Keitumetsi 800m Bronze
2 Dyam Isithandile 100m Gold
3 Mpike Ondamnkela 100m Silver
4 Mfokazi Somila 100m Silver
5 Mcetywa Sivuyisiwe Discuss Gold
6 Kom Qhamani Javelin

All these learners were supposed to proceed to Provincial Level but sadly due to the Department of Sports Recreation Arts and Culture’s (DSRAC)failure to provide funds to transport, accommodate and cater for the Athletes two of our learners had to remain behind.

It is with great sadness that I inform you that our experience was unpleasant. The team was scheduled to depart for Port Elizabeth on 12th March 2015 at 09h00am, consequently our learners availed themselves at Botha Sigcawuoffices at 07h00. Sadly, we waited next to Transkei Primary School until 20h30 and naturally leaners were fatigued and hungry and some wanted to leave. The coach had to use his personal funds to provide for the learners.

When we arrived at Port Elizabeth at around 04h00 am on the 13th March 2015,accomodation had not been arranged for by the Department officials but it was later organised at an SANDF Base Camp were our learner were subjected to inhospitable conditions viz share a single bed, sleep on chairs as tired as they were. They had to be ready for track events at 08h30am- tired and exhausted from the long wait in Mthatha, long journey to Port Elizabeth and miserable sleeping facilities.

Regardless of all those challenges; our learners performed very well.Dyam Isithandile came with two Silver medals for both 100m and 200m.Mcetywa Sivuyisiwe and Kom Qhamani became position 4 & 5 respectively on discuss. On the 6th of March 2015 the Primary School Provincial Games were held in East London. Our learner, Keitsumetsi Moloko, was part of the District Team. She was running the 800m. The athletes were told to arrive at 6h30, because the transport would be leaving at 7h00 am. The athletes had to wait until 9h00 am before they could depart for East London. Some of the Quantum busses that were supposed to transport learners were transporting teachers, who were not officials.

The athletes arrived at Jan Smuts Stadium- an hour before the event started. The athletes were tired and exhausted from the road and being cooped up in a bus for more than 2 hours. Keitumetsi Moloko participated in the 800m heats and she confidently, qualified for the finals. The finals were to take place on the 7th of March. The athletes were provided with lunch. However, the athletes had to stay up late and they had supper at midnight. The sleeping arrangement was chaotic. Some of the unauthorised teachers, who were not officials, squatted in the rooms allocated for athletes at the hotel. The following day Keitumetsi Moloko participated in the 800m final but due to an ankle injury, she could not finish the event.

Due to the poor support and mismanagement of athletics in Mthatha District we took another step to give our leaners a better opportunity to excel in athletics and so on the 17th March 2015 K.H.S was officially registered as a club with Athletics South Africa (ASA).Allow me to proudly state that K.H.S is the only school in the Mthatha District registered as a club. On the 20th March 2015, 20 of our learners competed against professional athletes from all overthe province and performed very well.

Ever since the school registered as a club in 2015, our athletes have been doing great in terms of the number of athletes going for the ASA junior championships, just recently in 2021 six (6) of Khanyisa High School Athletics club athletes qualified to go and participate in the ASA National Junior championships which were held at Paarl in April 2021. These athlets were

  • 1.Phooka Lehloenya
  • 2. Makubela Julys
  • 3. Yako Yamnkela
  • 4. Lebowa Precious
  • 5. Jamba Siseko
  • 6. Nompozolo Bathabile

With every good wish, I remain.

Public speaking Report by Agrippa M

Khanyisa High School’s public speaking club is a manifesto within the school that drills and showcases the eloquence in Khanyisa High School pupils. The public speaking club approaches a miscellany of contemporary issues. This emanates from the backdrop that the school`s public speaking arena is a microcosm of the global stage. Thus, the public speaking club toils to groom public speakers who can mount on national and International podiums.

The precocious students are trained by extremely motivational coaches; Mr Agrippa and Mr Thwala. These coaches abet them in ameliorating proficiency of public speaking modus operandi. Team work is one of the fundamental ethics of the public speaking club. The students are frequently given opportunities to present speeches to each other. The public speaking club also works hand in glove with the Debate club since both disciplines encompass grandiloquent or orotund flair.

The public speaking club has undoubtedly impacted positively on the social and personal development of its members. It teaches them self-discipline at the same time facilitating the development of analytical skills. The current public speaking members attest to the fact that they have been groomed into level headed, composed, confident and eloquent individuals. The public speaking club pledges to persist on drilling its members into tomorrows destined leaders who stand head and shoulders for their beliefs.

English Debate by Mrs Mabvira

The debate club of Khanyisa has always been my baby since the depature of Mr.Mataka.

Powerful debaters such as Xola Twayise ,Piwe Maqhina and our current Headgirl Onele Sobuza have raised the flag of Khanyisa so high by competing at both Provincial and National level .It would be unfair for me not to mention that Sobuza Onele was to complete in Hungary in July 2020 but could not do so due to the pandemic
All in all this club has helped learners to improve on their research skills let alone language proficiency .Debates will continue online.

Khanyisa High School Basketball Report 2021 by Dr L. Sincuba the Currently Eastern Cape Provincial Basketball secretary from 2019

Basketball is smart ball game which has been played at Khanyisa High School as from 2015 as was introduced by MrTomy. Dr Sincuba took over in training both boys and girls who had great interest in basketball. In 2017 two learners were selected to play in the National ball games in Pretoria. These were Sincuba Mbongeni and Mano Tonderai who played for the Eastern Cape Province under 18 boys. In 2019 one learner was also selected to play provincially and was further selected to play for the National ball games also in Pretoria. The learner was Kula Wonga who is currently doing grade 12 in 2021. All the three learners were given full scholarship of one year each. All the gratitude for school scholarship was introduced by the Director Mr S. Vattakunnel so as to motivate learners and its helping. Hiring of coaches at the time by the school was other contributing positive factor which brought basketball to new heights.

DRUM MAJORETTES

By Ms Jacisa

The drum majorettes were introduced by Ms. Jacisa at Khanyisa High school in 2016. When it started forty learners volunteered to join and the group has grown to 54.The categories of drum majorettes are the marchers, flag holders, flag performers, horse riders and the band. The school drum majorettes did their first performances on the Valentines’ Day in February 2017. The performance was excellent.

As excellent performers, the community can hire us for any event at a reasonable cost.
